Sneaker culture has changed drastically over the last century, with trainers that were once reserved for performance now becoming fashion staples. You only have to look at the sheer number of Jordans out there to understand the shoes might not be just about basketball anymore. This switch has led some sneakers to become collector's items, much like Pokémon cards or Bearbricks, resulting in certain colorways now commanding high price tags on the resale market. As a result, we've decided to delve deeper into these premium shoes to uncover some of the most expensive sneakers around today.

Now, we're not talking about the rarest sneakers here, or the trainers that have sold for the most at auction; we're talking about shoes that are still technically available to buy from marketplaces, even if you would have to pay an extortionate price to get them. You might recognize a few of these if you're a sneakerhead...

5. Nike Air Yeezy 2 "Red October"

Perhaps the most instantly recognizable shoes on this list, the "Red October" Yeezys have long been known as some of the most expensive sneakers of all time. Even today, the shoes are pricey, selling for around $12,000 on average, although you would need to pay upwards of $16,000 if you were to buy a pair from StockX at the time of writing.

Now, part of the reason this sneaker is so expensive is that it is incredibly rare. Only a small number were made, and it wasn't long after their release that Kanye dropped his first adidas Yeezy anyway. The result is one incredibly expensive sneaker, with its "Solar Red" relative the only real Nike Yeezy that can compare.

4. Tiffany & Co. x Nike Air Force 1 Low "Friends and Family"

2023 was an exciting year for sneaker collaborations, with one of the biggest being Tiffany & Co.'s team-up with Nike and their Air Force 1 Lows. However, alongside the black and blue general release, Tiffany also made a handful of this "Friends and Family" colorway which commands an even higher price than the retail version on the resale market.

This isn't really surprising considering the names involved and the limited nature of their release. The price tag is higher than you might think though, with the shoes selling for around $11,000 on average, although the cheapest pair on StockX right now are going for more than $22,000.

3. Nike MAG "Back to the Future" (2011)

This is another recognizable one, although not just for hardcore sneakerheads this time. Film lovers may remember the Nike MAG from Back to the Future as the futuristic self-lacing shoe. Well, after a 20-year-plus wait, Nike finally released those exact shoes, albeit with an already extortionate price tag of $2,300.

Nowadays, this 2011 release will set you back closer to $20,000 or more depending on your size. StockX has one size listed for over $70,000, which more than justifies their inclusion in a list of the most expensive sneakers.

2. Off-White x Futura x Nike Dunk Low "Syracuse"

Just missing out on the top spot is the "Syracuse" Off-White x Futura x Nike Dunk Lows; sneakers that were originally showcased during the 2020 Paris Fashion Week, but didn't actually drop until 2023.

There are a lot of different team-ups going on here, with the shoes showcasing lots of different styles. For instance, Futura’s unique spray-paint aesthetic can be seen at the base layer, while the laces feature the late Virgil Abloh's signature tag.

These three parties coming together has resulted in some seriously sought-after shoes, whose last sale on StockX was over $28,000. They'd be even more expensive were you to buy a pair today, so it's hard not to include them in a list like this.

1. Concepts x Nike SB Dunk Low "White Lobster"

There is only one pair of shoes that best Off-White and Futura's offering, those shoes being the Concepts x Nike SB Dunk Low "White Lobster" colorway.

The answer as to why this relatively understated gray, white, and silver Dunk is so expensive is because it is the friends and family alternative to Concepts "Orange Lobster" colorway. There are very few pairs out there as a result, so the price tag if you fancied owning some is well over $35,000 right now, although StockX has one size priced at over $73,000.

It's hard to argue with a price tag that high that these aren't some of the most expensive sneakers around today.
